AIR BATTLE OF JAPAN
This area of the website deals with land based air units engaged in the war against Japan. The following list is a description of the individual pages.
ICEBERG. Operation ICEBERG was the invasion of Okinawa. This page presents a list of Marine, Navy, and Army units that gathered in the Ryukyus (Okinawa and Ie Shima) between 7 April and mid July 1945. During that period of time Marine Major General F. P. Mulcahy was the officer in command of the Tactical Air Force, Tenth Army (Provisional). The headquarters was based on the the HQ of Marine Air Wing 2.
BUNKHOUSE. Operation BUNKHOUSE was the AAF plan for the movement of land based air forces from the Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) to Okinawa and Ie Shima from July to Mid October 1945. By August 1945 the tactical air forces in the Ryukyus were averaging over 600 sorties per day against Japan.
OLYMPIC page presents the planning schedule for the movement of the 5th and 13 Air Forces to Kyushu.
CORONET presents the planning schedule for the first 60 days of the movement of the 5th and 7th Air Forces to Honshu. It is not unit specific, but it does identify the subset of movements from Kyushu.
Strategic Air Forces presents the build up of the 20th Air Force in the Marianas and the 8th Air Force in they Ryukyus. It includes the prospective schedule of reequipped and redeployed units from Europe.
